How to Store Supplements So They Actually Last
Most supplements don't go off. They fade. Left in the wrong spot, they slowly lose potency until you're taking a weaker dose than the label promises — and four things drive that: heat, moisture, light and air. Most household storage habits get at least one of them wrong. Here's how to get them right, and the myths worth dropping.
The quick version: cool, dry, dark, sealed — and read the label. Everything below is just the detail.
Heat — and the "fridge is safest" myth
Keep supplements somewhere cool and stable. Room temperature is fine; heat sources aren't. Not the cupboard above the oven, not a sunny windowsill, not the glovebox of a hot car.
But cold isn't the answer either. The fridge isn't automatically safer — take a cold bottle into a warm room and moisture condenses inside it, and damp is bad news for most supplements. Cool and dry beats cold and damp. The exception is products that say otherwise: some probiotics and liquids do need refrigerating. The label tells you. Follow it over any general rule.
Moisture — and the "bathroom cabinet is fine" myth
Keep them somewhere dry. Leave the little desiccant sachet in the bottle — it's there to absorb moisture, not to be thrown out. And close the lid properly every time.
The bathroom cabinet is one of the worst places you could pick. Every shower fills the room with steam, so your supplements ride a daily humidity swing. A kitchen cupboard away from the kettle and hob, or a bedroom drawer, does a far better job.
Light — and the "decant it into a nice jar" myth
Keep supplements in the container they came in. That dull, opaque bottle is doing a job.
Tipping them into a clear glass jar on a bright shelf looks lovely and quietly degrades any light-sensitive ingredients inside. The boring brown bottle is boring for a reason. Leave them in it.
Air — and the "load up the pill organiser" myth
Keep the bottle sealed until you're using it. If you like a pill organiser, only fill a few days' worth at a time.
Decanting a whole month into a weekly organiser leaves those capsules exposed to air and moisture for far longer than they should be. Fine for a few days. Not ideal as long-term storage, especially for anything sensitive.
The expiry date — and both myths about it
Here's the part people get wrong in two opposite directions.
An expiry date is a best-before for guaranteed potency, not a poison cliff. The decline is gradual. A well-stored product a little past its date is usually a question of reduced strength, not danger. So "it expired yesterday, bin it" is normally overcautious.
But the other extreme is wrong too. "Dates are meaningless, keep it forever" ignores that potency really does drop off, and that storage speeds it up. The honest answer sits in between: use your judgement, don't rely on anything potency-critical past its date, and bin anything discoloured, off-smelling or clearly past its best. And where the label gives a specific once-opened window, that wins.
Where black garlic fits
One reason a standardised supplement is easier to live with than a loose foodstuff: it's built to be stable. Black garlic as an ingredient varies and degrades over time, like any food. Sealed into a capsule at a fixed dose, it's protected and consistent — the same amount today as in three months, if you store it as above. That's a point about packaging and consistency, nothing more.
The takeaway
Cool, dry, dark, sealed — and when in doubt, read the label. Four small habits, and you get the dose you actually paid for.
